Painting industrial landscapes in Dublin
Welcome to my website, and my first blog. At the moment I am in a creative phase of paintings, working on a series of oils depicting the Grand Canal docks in Dublin, or 'Sillicon Docks' (specifically Boland's Mill). My motivation for this project was my decision to apply for the Sky TV artist of the year landscape competition. The brief was to create a landscape which included a reference to an urban environment, so I decided on the Boland's Mill warehouses which are going through a complete overhaul, with massive new office and residential blocks about to spring up. Dublin in general is undergoing a huge change in terms of new buildings so I wanted to make a reference to this as well as recording some of the industrial revolution era buildings. It's also a nice area to paint as you have the reflections in the water, so there are great painterly styles to explore with this subject. The painting below was probably the most successful of the three paintings I tackled due mostly to the areas of light and shade that I managed to execute competently in the centre, the focal area. So these are areas of painting which I hope to develop soon, as well as trying to loosen up my painting technique. That's all for today!
